Vehicle insurance is a type of insurance policy you can purchase for any type of vehicle you may want to own. And this goes far beyond the typical car, truck, or minivan that you and your family need to get around town.
Oftentimes, insurance agents will refer to vehicle insurance specifically when they talk about “fun” but optional vehicles – everything from motorcycles and jet skis to ATVs and RVs. Due to higher risks associated with these types of vehicles, state insurance requirements will vary greatly from one area to the next.

- Need a motorcycle insurance quote? Because it’s legally required in every state – but not all states have the same requirements.
- Need an RV insurance quote? It’s legally required in every state too, but these policies are more complicated because Campers and Travel-Trailers may also be a factor.
- Bot coverage isn’t legally required in all 50 states, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shop around for an affordable quote – better to be safe than sorry!
- If you own a small business, you should definitely be shopping around for Commercial Auto Insurance. It helps protect you and your business in the event of financial loss.
- ATV Insurance is similar to boat insurance in that your state may not require it, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be financially protecting yourself.
How to Find Cheap Vehicle Insurance Online
It’s surprisingly easy to find a company willing to insure your vehicle. The larger ones, especially, will likely offer you a bundled policy discount (such as on a home and a boat, or motorcycle and ATV). There may even be local providers who specialize in such vehicles.

The Most Popular Types of Insurance Policies
The forms of coverage below aren’t just the most popular types of coverage for automobiles – they apply to vehicles, too. But check with your insurance agent, because there may be unique forms of coverage that either your state or your particular vehicle may require also:
- Auto Liability – This type of coverage pays out when the accident is deemed your fault. Depending on the damages, Liability coverage is divided into:
- Liability: Bodily Injury – If you or anyone else involved sustains physical injury, medical costs, or lost wages
- Liability: Property Damage – pays for repairs or replacement of damaged or totaled property
- Personal Injury Protection – covers the medical costs for you and anyone else listed under your policy regardless of fault
- Medical Payments – Can pay for medical expenses or funeral costs resulting from an accident (not available in all states)
- Collision – either repairs or replaces your vehicle in the event of a collision for the Fair Market Value of your repairs or the total cost of your vehicle. May require that you pay a deductible.
- Comprehensive Insurance – protects against non-collision vehicle damage, such as fire, flood, theft, vandalism, or other acts of god
- Uninsured Motorist – financial protection against damages resulting from a collision with a motorist who does not have insurance of their own
- Under-insured Motorist – protects you financially from paying the difference if you get into a collision with a driver who carries insufficient insurance coverage
Because insurance coverage options between automobiles and vehicles are so similar, you may have the option to bundle your automotive insurance with your RV or boat insurance, also. But not all insurance providers are created equal when it comes to providing insurance for recreational vehicles, so you’ll want to shop around and make sure that your provider is truly offering you the best deal with your bundle.
